What will the 1999 Texas House Look Like?

Tuesday, December 16th, 1997
The Texas House of Representatives is losing some key leaders and they are all Democrats from small towns. Leaving are Allen Hightower of Huntsville, Allen Place of Gatesville, Keith Oakley of Terrell, John Hirschi of Wichita Falls, Pete Patterson of Brookston and Hugo Berlanga of Corpus Christi. All were part of Speaker Pete Laney’s team and all were committee chairs. The Democrats have a slim margin in the House and it will be difficult to keep all of there seats for the Democrats.

Given the commitments of Governor George Bush to spend a large sums of money on a Get Out the Vote effort, some of the above open seats could go for the GOP.

Most legislative analysts believe that the Speaker and the Leadership PAC of Mark Stiles and Rob Junell will have to work to keep the House in Democratic hands.

Gossip and rumors

Sunday, December 14th, 1997
Here is some gossip and rumors which even I don’t believe:

That Ron Kirk, Mayor of Dallas, is interested in running for the Attorney General’s position as a Democrat. Kirk, former Sec. of State of Texas would be a fine candidate and he is an African-American. But, I don’t think he can take the pay cut.

That Jew Don Boney a Houston City Council Member is thinking about running against Congresswoman, Sheila Jackson Lee. Boney is a good guy and has a big following among the grass roots. But, it is hard to defeat a Member of Congress who is also a Woman.

That George Greanias will be the next City Attorney for the City of Houston. George is a good attorney and would bring lots of experience to that job. But, the present City Attorney, Gene Locke is staying on for a while. If Mayor Lee Brown offered it and George accepted it, it might look like a political payoff.

So, for all of you out there who want me to print your gossip I just did, and send some more.
