Happy Holidays

Monday, December 18th, 1995

There is a lot of gossip about people either not running or thinking about running for some office that my ear is getting sore. So, the heck with it I am taking the next 10 days off to celebrate the holidays. Happy Holidays and I will be back on the net around the 29th of Dec.

Ho-Ho-Ho

I am tired of looking at the political scene and I am taking off for the Holidays. I will look at Santa’s impact on politics when I return at the end of Dec. Happy Holidays

The Washington Meeting

Thursday, December 14th, 1995

All of the top state-wide Democrats went to Washington this week to meet with President Clinton. They told him not to write off the State of Texas. According to some the President wants to win in Texas and will put it on his priority list. No recent polls are available but no one believe that Clinton could win the state if the election was held this year. However, the President is moving up in the nation-wide polls and he should also be moving up in Texas.

Clinton has gained 8% points in the polls since March. His approval ratings are now in the mid 50’s. He is ahead of where President Reagan was at this time. According to the latest polls he beats Bob Dole by about 10% and in a three way race he wins by 13%.

While the President is not doing so well in Texas most insiders think he could gain in the polls if he would campaign in the state. The state party also needs the President’s organization and his money to help in its state-wide and local races. Perhaps the Clinton organization will take another look at Texas.

Who is running for what?

Wednesday, December 13th, 1995

It is the Christmas season in Texas and also the political season. There are more political moves at this time than any other time of the year. The filing deadline is just twenty days away and every time an elected official quits or decides to run for another office that opens up opportunities for other would be office holders.

US Rep. John Bryant decision to run for the US Senate changes that race and also opens up his seat in the Dallas area. Bryant should be regarded as the front runner. He’s a respected progressive Democrat with lots of support state-wide. He will do well in the urban areas and in South Texas. Jim Chapman and John Odam will have a real interesting time with John Bryant in their race.

US Rep Jack Fields (R-Dist 8) decision to give up his safe Republican District will also cause movement in the ranks. Already State Senator Don Henderson, State Reps Steve Ogden and Kevin Brady have said they may want to be a Member of Congress.

If they all run that will open up a State Senate seat and two State Reps seats. Look for Berry Smitherman a former Democrat to get into the District 8 race along with Judge Ted Poe and former candidate in the 25th Dist. Dr. Eugene Fontonet. There will be others looking at the State Senate seat if Henderson really does go for the Congressional seat.

And finally former Drug Chief and former Houston Police Chief Lee Brown is coming back to Houston to be a Professor at Rice University and also to look at running for Mayor of Houston in 1997. His move will cause other potential candidates to decide to move up their quest for the Mayor’s seat.

Stay tuned.
